Hi all,

It's nice to see that there are so many web pages dedicated to the 8-series.

I'm looking to buy a 840. I live in Greece so I want to get the car over here.
There are hardly any E31s here. In some page I have read that they have been sold only 9!

Anyway back to my issue. I want to get the 840.
People tell me that I shouldn't go for a 10 year old car because the technology is too old and crap like that. On the other side I believe that it is very beautiful (the new cars are way too "rounded") and it has become a classic.
I have looked on mobile.de and found some.

My questions:
1. For insurance reasons (although I haven't checked the rates) I'm looking for the 4.0L and not the newer 4.4L. Performance-wise I have seen that the 4.4 has the same performance as the 4.0L. What are the advantages of the 4.4 compared to the 4.0? Is it worth paying €5.000 or €6.000 more to get the 4.4?

2. Since I don't know german and I have tried to get some translation out of systran but didn't help too much.
Can somebody please tell me if this is a good deal? Of course I'm looking for a car in a good condition non-crashed!

3. What should I look out for when I go to buy the car. I will take it to a BMW-service to have it checked out of course but what would you say is needed to be checked as a first look?

4. If someone has the time to check out some deals on the net (in Europe and preferable Germany) for a good deal for a 840 please send me a private message with the links.

Thanks all for your time reading this and hopefully I will soon join your club as an owner 8)

Hi all,

Hello and welcome "murdof"

Wow, only nine in whole Greece...sounds really exotic!

WHO told you, that the technology is too old and crap?? Absolutely wrong!
I would place the opinion, that even nowadays the 4,0 or 4,4 liter engine is still "up to date" and a very good "piece of engineering" Maybe it can not "offer" that much "bugs" like a new E65 (´"it´s not a bug ... it´s a feature"... )

If you get a good offer for a 4,4 you should take it...but it is not worth to pay that much more for it...(different story with the 5,0 vs. 5,4l 12 Cyl.)!
(It is more important, that the car is in good condition - not the question
if you should take a 4 or 4,4..)
You should check the insurance question first, ´cause I am sure that nobody here knows something about car insurance in Greece!

The deal sounds ok...but with our beloved 8th series it is VERY VERY important to see the car "live" and it would be perfect...that you check it together with a specialist! (If you are not your own specialist, of course!)

I think you should ask Alv, because he is what we call "8th series-Guru" (sorry Alv  )

Thanks Michael for your quick reply.
Hopefully alv will give me some suggestions when he reads this :top:

Unfortunately I'm not a specialist and what I was thinking was that when I go there to see the car up close to ask them to take it to a BMW service center to have it checked out.
Is this something that is generally done in Germany?

Do you guys believe that 130.000km is a lot for a 840?
I understand that it is a BMW and 130.000 is like getting a new car.
But we are not talking about a 3-series where a normal user would drive the car but a car driven/bought only by fanatics of fast driving.

Hi murdof,
the most important thing is the servicebook.
If it is complete, the car is ok.
Mostly they turn back the km, and you don´t know what the car has runned.
So you have to look at the servicbook. If there is no book, don´t buy the car !!
This car at your link has an normaly price, but you have to ask how much persons have owned the car.
That´s what I can say,hope it´s ok for you.
If you got any questions,do it by pm.
